Views to rememberThe Heritage Coast around Flamborough is absolutely stunning and a playground for the travelling adventurer.
Towering cliffs, about twice the height of York Minster, are home to thousands of seabirds and provide a majestic backcloth to coves and shores. At Flamborough Head you can enjoy a clifftop walk, a trip in a fishing coble or watch the seabirds glide above the cliffs and dive into the sea to catch fish. The RSPB reserve at Bempton is also a must for bird lovers. The cliffs boast massive numbers of seabirds and you can spot puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots and gannets galore. Danes Dyke is worth visiting and was a defensive earthwork believed to have been built in the Iron Age when flint weapons kept invaders at bay. The earthworks bank is some 20ft high and two-and-a-half miles long running across Flamborough Head from one cliff to the other and built to protect settlements on the headland. Flamborough itself is a typical East Coast fishing village with charming narrow streets and numerous taverns. In the High Street can be found a wall barometer and the old pump where the villagers refilled their jugs and pans in the days before water was available to every house.
