The vicar walk

Canon Cooper was Vicar of Filey for 55 years.

Among his long walks were those from Filey to London, Rome and Venice on separate occasions. He also walked extensively through other parts of Europe.

Filey

To see the town and the brigg why not follow this walk around Filey and the Brigg which can be either three-and-a-half miles or four-and-a-half miles.

Start from the Coble Landing at the northern end of Filey sea front.

Walk up Church Ravine and climb the steps to your right, beyond the telephone box, and follow the top path above the ravine.

Turn right through the gate into the churchyard and visit the church, which has an interesting Fisherman’s window.

Follow the path from the church doorway which descends to the bridge across the ravine. At the far side pass some 17th century cottages on your right.

At the junction you can turn left to Filey Folk Museum which is only 30 yards down the road on the right.

Return to the corner and walk down Laundry Road at the right of the Station Hotel. At the end of the road cross over and turn right to the roundabout, then bear left along the Scarborough Road.

Turn right at the far side of Filey Fields Farm, 50 yards before the Filey boundary.

Walk down the lane which after a while swings left, then right. Continue across the fields with a ditch on your left. When the ditch ends carry straight on across the field to the clifftop path overlooking the sea.

Turn right and enjoy the great views down to the rugged seashore. After a mile the path continues on to Filey Brigg where there are views over Filey Bay to the spectacular 400 feet high cliffs at Bempton.

You now have a choice of routes from here back to Coble Landing – the shortest route is to turn right when the railed fence on your right ends, curve around the pond on your right, then continue with the cliffs on your left across the edge of the country park.

When you reach the ravine, go down the set of steps to a tarmac road in the bottom, turn left down to the beach and turn right along the sand to Coble Landing.

If it is high tide, more steps lead from the ravine along the clifftop to Church Ravine.

However, you may decide to continue along the cliff top path on to the headland and follow the cliffs round to the ravine at the country park following the same route back to Coble Landing.

Thirdly, if the tide allows, you can continue on to the headland and go down to the seashore around the Brigg, returning to Coble Landing along the base of the cliffs and across the beach.
